“From College Dorms to Unicorns: Inspiring Indian Startup Journeys”

🎓 From College Blog to Career Revolution: The Internshala Story 💼

What started as a simple blog written by an IIT student to help friends find internships has today become India’s largest internship and training platform — Internshala. It’s a story of how one student’s frustration turned into a movement that reshaped the way young India learns and works.

The Beginning

In 2010, Sarvesh Agrawal, an alumnus of IIT Madras, saw a common struggle among students — the lack of real-world opportunities.

Many talented students couldn’t find internships, and those who did often landed unpaid or irrelevant ones. Campus placements were limited, and the bridge between college education and industry skills was huge.

To help his peers, Sarvesh started Internshala as a small blog, sharing internship listings and tips on how to apply effectively. What began as an act of helping friends soon caught attention nationwide.

As more students joined, Sarvesh realized the potential to build something bigger — a complete platform connecting students, colleges, and companies.

Why It Worked

Internshala worked because it filled a massive gap between education and employability — a problem no one else was solving effectively at the time.

  • Student-Centric Approach – Focused on college students and freshers from day one.
  • Ease of Access – Simple, free, and transparent application process.
  • Skill Building – Added online trainings to help students prepare for real jobs.
  • Trust Factor – Verified companies and legitimate internships.

This mix of trust, accessibility, and relevance made Internshala a household name in Indian campuses.

Growth Journey

From a blog to a full-fledged company, Internshala grew steadily — fueled by purpose, not hype:

  • 2010 – Started as a WordPress blog by Sarvesh.
  • 2011–2013 – Transitioned into a platform connecting students and startups.
  • 2015 – Introduced skill-based online trainings.
  • Today – Over 25 million+ students, 3 lakh+ companies, and 10,000+ colleges on the platform.

Internshala became more than a website — it became a career launchpad for India’s youth.

The Big Lesson

Great startups don’t always begin with grand ambitions — they begin with simple solutions to real problems.

Sarvesh didn’t chase funding or fame; he chased impact. His story shows that when you build with empathy and purpose, growth follows naturally.

Takeaway for Dreamers

  • Build something useful, not just something “cool.”
  • Start small — consistency turns side projects into revolutions.
  • Understand your users deeply; their trust is your biggest asset.
  • You don’t need an office — just intent, internet, and initiative.

“Startups aren’t built in boardrooms; they’re built in dorm rooms — with ideas that matter.”

Our journey through “From College Dorms to Unicorns” reminds us that big dreams often start small.

From hostel ideas to global brands, these stories prove that innovation, courage, and persistence can turn student projects into revolutions.

Here’s to the next generation of dreamers — may your ideas be bold and your impact even bigger.
