“From College Dorms to Unicorns: Inspiring Indian Startup Journeys”
🏨 From College Dreams to Global Hospitality: The OYO Rooms Story 🌍
What began as a teenager’s dream to make travel affordable soon became one of India’s biggest startup success stories. OYO Rooms, founded by Ritesh Agarwal, transformed the country’s fragmented hotel industry into a tech-driven hospitality network that spans continents.

The Beginning
Back in 2012, 18-year-old Ritesh Agarwal from Odisha had one big problem: finding a clean, affordable hotel while traveling across India. Staying in cheap lodges during his student days, he realized that millions faced the same struggle.
That’s when he came up with the idea — what if he could standardize small hotels and make budget stays reliable and accessible for everyone?
With that spark, OYO (short for “On Your Own”) was born. Initially launched as Oravel Stays, a platform inspired by Airbnb, it soon pivoted into a full-fledged hotel network — where even a budget room could offer consistency, cleanliness, and comfort.
Why It Worked
OYO’s success wasn’t built on luxury — it was built on solving a real, everyday problem.
- Real Need – Affordable yet quality rooms for India’s budget travelers.
- Smart Tech Integration – Used data and analytics to improve customer experience.
- Scalability – Onboarded small hotels across cities and standardized services.
- Youthful Hustle – Started with zero big investors — only grit and vision.
In just a few years, Ritesh went from pitching his idea at college events to winning the Thiel Fellowship, a program that funded young innovators under 20 to skip college and build their startups.
Growth Journey
OYO’s journey is one of fearless expansion:
- 2013 – Pivoted from Oravel to OYO Rooms.
- 2015 – Expanded to 100+ cities in India.
- 2018–2019 – Entered international markets — China, UK, UAE, and more.
- 2020 – Became one of the world’s largest hotel chains by room count.
Even amid ups and downs, OYO remained a story of how a young founder’s college-age curiosity turned into a global movement redefining hospitality.
The Big Lesson
You don’t need to build something new — you need to build something better.
Ritesh didn’t invent hotels; he reimagined how India experienced them.
Innovation isn’t about ideas — it’s about improvement.

Takeaway for Dreamers
- Start with a problem that frustrates you — chances are, millions feel the same.
- Age and degrees don’t define success — persistence does.
- Learn, pivot, and adapt — growth never follows a straight line.
“If you solve a problem for yourself and scale it, you’ll solve it for the world.” – Ritesh Agarwal
